Love at the Cornhusk

Love at the Cornhusk †Aida Rivera Ford Tinang halted before the Senora’s door and balanced the baby’s top. The pooches that came to bark at the entryway were peculiar mutts, huge mouthed creatures with a feeling of predominance. They stuck their heads through the hogfence, lolling their tongues and stressing. Out of nowhere, from the gumamela line, a little dark mutt developed and crawled through the fence effortlessly. It went to her, head down and body trembling. â€Å"Bantay. Ay, Bantay! † she shouted as the little pooch laid its paws upon her shirt to sniff the infant on her arm. The infant was apprehensive and cried. The large creatures yapped with disappointment. Tito, the youthful ace, had seen her and was calling to his mom. â€Å"Ma, it’s Tinang. Mama, Ma, it’s Tinang. † He came getting down to open the entryway. â€Å"Aba, you are so tall now, Tito. † He grinned his girl’s grin as he held on, warding the pooches off. Tinang left rapidly behind the veranda steps fixed with plants and colorful bougainville. On landing, she stopped to wipe her shoes cautiously. About her, the Senora’s white and lavender butterfly orchids vacillated carefully in the daylight. She saw however that the purple waling-waling that had once been her undertaking to conceal from the blistering sun with banana leaves and to water with blend of charcoal and eggs and water was not in blossom. â€Å"Is nobody covering the waling-waling now? † Tinang inquired. â€Å"It will kick the bucket. † â€Å"Oh, the house cleaner will come to cover the orchids later. † The Senora called from inside. â€Å"Tinang, let me see your child. Is it a kid? † â€Å"Yes, Ma,† Tito yelled from first floor. â€Å"And the ears are immense! † â€Å"What do you expect,† answered his mom; â€Å"the father is a Bagobo. Indeed, even Tinang resembles a Bagobo now. † Tinang snickered and felt warmness for her previous fancy woman and the kid Tito. She sat reluctantly on the dark narra couch, just because a guest. Her eyes obfuscated. Seeing the Senora’s limply full figure, wrapped in a free midsection less housedress that descended to her lower legs, and the black out fragrance of agua de colonia mixed with kitchen flavor, appeared to her the substance of the agreeable world, and she murmured thinking about the long walk home through the mud, the baby’s legs rode to her midriff, and Inggo, her significant other, sitting tight for her, his body smelling of tuba and sweat, hunching down on the floor, clad just in his foul underpants. â€Å"Ano, Tinang, is it not something worth being thankful for to be hitched? the Senora asked, feeling sorry for Tinang on the grounds that her dress gave route at the placket and squeezed at her swollen bosoms. It was, indeed, a dress she had given Tinang quite a while back. â€Å"It is hard, Senora, hard. Better that I were working here once more. † â€Å"There! † th e Senora said. â€Å"Didn’t I mention to you what it would resemble, huh? . . . that you would be a captive to your significant other and that you would work an infant forever lashed to you. It is safe to say that you are not pregnant once more? † Tinang wriggled at the Senora’s unequivocal quality yet conceded she was. â€Å"Hala! You will have twelve after a short time. † The Senora got up. Come, I will give you a few dresses and an old cover that you can cut into things for the infant. † They went into a jumbled room which resembled a tremendous storage room and as the Senora sifted through some garments, Tinang asked, â€Å"How is Senor? † â€Å"Ay, he is continually losing his temper over the tractor drivers. It isn't how it was when Amado was here. You recollect what a decent driver he was. The tractors were constantly kept in working condition. In any case, presently . . . I wonder why he left out of nowhere. He said he would be away for just two days . . . .† â€Å"I don’t know,† Tinang said. The infant started to cry. Tinang shushed him with bothering. â€Å"Oy, Tinang, go to the kitchen; your Bagobito is ravenous. † For the following hour, Tinang sat in the kitchen with an odd inclination; she viewed the young lady who was currently possessing the kitchen work around with a hanky grasped I one hand. She had lipstick on as well, Tinang noted. the young lady took a gander at her quickly yet didn't grin. She set down a container of vanished milk for the infant and served her espresso and cake. The Senora drank espresso with her and addressed about keeping the baby’s stomach bound and preparing it to remain without anyone else so she could work. At long last, Tinang raised, haltingly, with phrases like â€Å"if it won't insult you† and â€Å"if you are not very busy† the motivation behind her visitâ€which was to request that Senora be a madrina in absolution. The Senora promptly consented and said she would give the baptismal garments and the charge for the minister. The time had come to go. â€Å"When would you say you are returning once more, Tinang? † the Senore asked as Tinang prepared the child. â€Å"Don’t overlook the heap of garments and . . . goodness, Tinang, you better stop by the drugstore. They asked me once whether you were still with us. You have a letter there nd I was going to open it to check whether there was awful news however I figured you would be coming. † A letter! Tinang’s heart beat fiercely. Someone is dead; I realize someone is dead, she thought. She crossed herself and subsequent to expressing gratitude toward the Senora bountifully, she rushed down. T he canines approached and Tito needed to limit them. â€Å"Bring me some youthful corn next time, Tinang,† he shouted toward her. Tinang held up some time at the drugstore which was likewise the mail station of the barrio. At last, the man went to her: â€Å"Mrs. , do you need medication for your infant or for yourself? † â€Å"No, I wanted my letter. I was told I have a letter. † â€Å"And what is your name, Mrs.? † He drawled. â€Å"Constantina Tirol. † The man got a case and gradually experienced the heap of envelopes the greater part of which were written in pencil, â€Å"Tirol, Tirol, Tirol. . . .† He at last pulled out a letter and gave it to her. She gazed at the new scribbling. It was not from her sister and she could think about nobody else who could keep in touch with her. Santa Clause Maria, she thought; perhaps something has happened to my sister. â€Å"Do you need me to peruse it for you? † â€Å"No, no. † She rushed from the drugstore, squashed that he should think her unskilled. With the infant on one arm and the heap of garments on the other and the letter gripped in her grasp she ended up strolling toward home. The downpours had made a profound swamp of the mud street and Tinang followed the prints left by the men and the carabaos that had gone before all her from sinking mud up to her knees. She was somewhere down in the street before she got aware of her shoes. With sickening dread, she saw that they were covered with thick, dark earth. Carefully, she pulled off one shoe after the other with the hand despite everything clasping exactly. At the point when she had integrated the shoes with the bands and had thrown them on an arm, the child, the group, and the letter were completely spread with mud. There must be a spot to put the child down, she thought, edgy now about the letter. She strolled on until she detected an edge of a field where cornhusks were dissipated under a kamansi tree. She pushed together a heap of husks with her foot and laid the infant downward on it. With a moan, she drew the letter from the envelope. She gazed at the letter which was written in English. My dearest Tinay, Hello, how is life getting along? It is safe to say that you are still in acceptable condition? With respect to myself, equivalent to common. Be that as it may, you’re a long way from my side. It is difficult to be a long way from our sweetheart. Tinay, do you despite everything love me? I trust your sort and liberal heart will never blur. My darling is consistent with me. He never intended to abandon me. Amado, she thought. Amado. Also, she cried, recollecting the little youngster she was under two years back when she would take food to Senor in the field and the workers would eye her subtly. Her skin, as well, was not as dull as those of the young ladies who worked in the fields weeding around the clusters of abaca. Her lower lip stuck out derisively when the ranch hands addressed her with many complimenting words. She snickered when a Bagobo with two hectares of land requested that her wed him. Sexual Assault And Harassment Incidents in College - Free Essay Example

Though the college experience is oftentimes one of personal growth, increasing social life, and educational opportunity, campuses are faced with the rising issue of sexual assault and how to handle allegations every single day. It is reported that up to 11.2% of all students experience rape or sexual assault, and only handful of those victims are reporting it (Rainn). Reasons as to why the report levels aren’t higher has to do with campus policies and their reputation on how they handle the issue at hand. In order for colleges to avoid discrepancies on their campus or bad reputations, they unfortunately, tend to keep these types of matters in the dark. However, efforts have been instated to promote awareness and promote education sexual harassment and rape on general terms. Campuses have observed that alcohol/drugs, low reports, and overall peer pressure are the general factors that lead to sexual harassment charges and rape. College is usually a place where young people are on their own for the first time and get a chance to really experiment with both sex and alcohol. Oftentimes the combination can lead to inappropriate or even dangerous situations for young women and sometimes, young men. Based off of just the mass media, drugs and more consistently alcohol, are both considered to be pivotal moments in the college experience, however their recreational abuse aids in leading reports of sexual harassment (Mintz). In some cases, the aggressor will use some form of substance to lower the victim’s resistance or decrease their ability to fight back by discretely inserting it into an alcoholic beverage, which is considered a â€Å"date rape drug†. At least one-half of all violent crimes involve alcohol consumption by the perpetrator, the victim, or both (Collins and Messerschmidt 1993). Sexual assault fits this pattern a little too well. Hence, across the contrasting populations studied, researchers routinely have found that roughly one half of all sexual assaults are committed by men who had been drinking alcohol preceding the attack (NIAAA). It is also crucial to emphasize that although a woman’s alcohol consumption can lead her to a dangerous place with an increased risk of sexual assault, she is still in no way responsible for the attack. The perpetrators are legally and morally responsible for their actions and can only be judged upon their own behavior. To tie some loose ends, alcohol consumption at college campuses is at an all time high, and rules and regulations regarding underage drinking and consumption laws in general, aren’t necessarily at the top of the priority list. Unfortunately, the victims of assault oftentimes do not prioritize reporting their attacks. Only 20% of female students reported their abuse to the authorities. In most cases, this is because women fear they could be belittled, no one would listen, or they’d be shamed for putting themselves in an unsafe environment. Often, the suspects of sexual assault are defended over the victim, who is then shamed or even scolded for behavior seen to be contributing to the assault. It should also be considered that most victims of sexual assault know their defiler on some sort of personal level. As reported by RAINN, around seven out of ten sexual assaults are carried out by someone the victim knows. This is another factor contributing to women underreporting their assaults. A victim who withholds from telling anyone, out of fear they’ll be shunned or won’t be believed, is even less likely to report abuse from a boyfriend/girlfriend, a mother or father, a teacher, or a teammate (NIAAA). This unfavorable truth stems from a victim’s stereotyped and corrupted assumption that they are less likely to be believed in such a situation. Regrettably, the media in terms of a range between news channels and award-winning Hollywood movies, there isn’t much of a voice or safe place for these victims to tell their stories without second guessing if it’d be worth the slander and bashing they’d receive. Lastly, when women have confided in close individuals, they are often advised to ignore it, forget it, and move on. The oppression of emotional warfare that exists in the minds of the victims isn’t a big enough headline to be considered noteworthy or pressing enough to call a change to. Peer pressure plays a role in sexual assault as well. These young adults are on their own for the first time, some of them breaking the shackles of a 9:00 curfew off their wrists, and finally able to be free and participate in activities they couldn’t so much do with their parents around. Students may feel pressured to participate in unfortunate popular social activities like drinking, drug use, hopping from party to party, or even going so far as engaging in sexual activities that aren’t uncomfortable to them. There is a lot of tension, especially, for students to drink, leading to situations where women may consume more alcohol than they intend, leaving them vulnerable to assault (Mintz). This comes from dismantled portrayals and identity crisis within them, so they reach for a bubbly friend to make them more, â€Å"comfortable.† The limit a person is willing to drink is usually based on however much their friends are or as much as it seems the people around th em are ingesting. If they perceive that their peers are drinking a lot, they will take normal precautions to match them, even if their perception is inaccurate. With skewed views on how to fit in and colleges past the inspirational posters that middle schools are holding onto, instead of finding friends, students are turning to alcohol, which in turn is becoming the cause of sexual assault crimes on campuses across the United States (RAINN). Sexual assault is spreading across colleges with no intention to slow down because of alcohol abuse, women not reporting their attack, and students feeling pressured to act in a certain way when in college situations for the first time. With colleges focusing their attention towards money jackpot deals and promoting their latest football gear, women are still hiding in their shame, deciding to never follow through with reporting their abuse. Alcohol use continues to skyrocket with campuses loosening their policies and rules concerning its consumption. Peer pressure is still considered an issue in the social development of people entering college, and no one seems too rushed to push towards social acceptance. Sexual assault cases are on the track to being pushed under the rug and ignored. Campuses continue to struggle to find the time to figure out a solution to this rapid issue, however, in the meantime women might just need that one push of confidence and bravery to rise as a hero, instead of a foul human.
